Davide Melisi

Davide Melisi x sito  Dr. Melisi is the leader of the Digestive Molecular Clinical Oncology Research Unit at the   University of Verona fostered by the prestigious Start-Up research grant through the Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sul Cancro.

Dr. Melisi has been directly involved in laboratory and clinical research since his internship as MD student and as fellow in Medical Oncology in the Division of Medical Oncology and the Laboratory of Molecular Cancer Therapy of the University of Naples “Federico II” Medical School under the mentorship of Prof. Giampaolo Tortora and Prof. Fortunato Ciardiello. Specifically, he studied the anticancer activity and mechanism of action of several novel drugs – including monoclonal antibodies, small molecules and antisense oligonucleotides – selectively targeting tyrosine kinase receptors and signaling pathways. He also contributed to the design and the conduction of several clinical trials especially in colorectal cancer.

In 2005, Dr. Melisi joined the Department of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston, TX, under the mentorship of Dr. James L. Abbruzzese. Working in the laboratory leaded by Dr. Paul J. Chiao, he was involved in different translational research projects on the role of targeting signal transduction molecules on the development, growth, and metastatization of pancreatic cancer. In particular, Dr. Melisi focused his work on the inhibition of the Smad-dependent and Smad-independent pathways driven by the Transforming Growth Factor β as therapeutic strategies in pancreatic cancer. During his postdoctoral training, Dr. Melisi was supported by several competitive fellowships through the Italian Foundation for Cancer Research, the American-Italian Cancer Foundation, and the SASS Foundation for Medical Research. Dr. Melisi was selected to attend several competitive courses, including the 2007 NCI-AACR Cancer Research Imaging Camp at the Center for In Vivo Microscopy, Duke University, Durham, NC, and the 2008 Methods in Clinical Cancer Research AACR/ASCO Workshop, Vail, CO.

In 2009, Dr. Melisi was recruited as Clinical and Experimental Tenure Lecturer at the National Cancer Institute – Fondazione G. Pascale in Naples, Italy.

Since December 2011, Dr. Davide Melisi is Assistant Professor in Medical Oncology at the University of Verona. Here, he is in charge of the preclinical and clinical research for gastrointestinal tumors. He is also part of the phase I clinical trial program in oncology at the early phase clinical research unit Centro Ricerche Cliniche di Verona (CRC).

Dr. Melisi received several prestigious awards, including the 2003 “Prof. Piero Trivella” award from Italian Cancer Society, the 2007 “The Marion D. Edwards” award in Hepatic Oncology, and the 2008 “Nunzio Pascale” International award for cancer research. He serves as reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals, including the Clinical Cancer Research, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, and Annals of Oncology journals.
